The Junior Systems Administrator supports the stability, security, and day-to-day operations of the organization’s IT infrastructure in a Microsoft-first, cloud-centric environment. This role is designed as a hands-on operational position, focused on monitoring systems, documenting environments and processes, handling routine administrative tasks, and supporting senior administrators with incident response, maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
This is an ideal role for an early-career systems administrator who is eager to build strong fundamentals across Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server, identity, monitoring, and operational best practices, while learning from senior technical staff.
Core Operational Responsibilities
- Monitor the health, performance, and availability of systems and services across Azure, Microsoft 365, and on‑prem / hybrid infrastructure.
- Respond to alerts, investigate issues, perform initial troubleshooting, and escalate to senior administrators when required.
- Execute routine operational tasks such as user provisioning, access reviews, certificate renewals, patching, and system checks.
- Assist with backup monitoring, restore testing, and validation of recovery processes.
- Support endpoint, server, and cloud resource lifecycle activities (build, change, retire).
Documentation & Process Ownership
- Create, update, and maintain clear technical documentation, including:
- System diagrams and inventories
- Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Runbooks for alerts, incidents, and routine tasks
- Knowledge base articles
- Ensure documentation remains accurate and up to date as systems evolve.
- Follow established change, incident, and problem management processes.
Support to Senior Systems Administrators
Assist senior administrators with:- Infrastructure changes and maintenance activities
- Cloud resource configuration and cleanup
- Testing and validation of new solutions
- Security controls implementation and verification
Learn and apply best practices for reliability, security, and operational excellence.
Security & Compliance Support
- Perform routine security hygiene tasks (access reviews, logging validation, alert follow‑ups).
- Support identity and access management activities under guidance (Azure AD / Entra ID, MFA, conditional access).
- Follow organizational security policies and contribute to audit readiness through accurate documentation and evidence collection.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve monitoring, documentation, and operational processes.
- Contribute to automation initiatives (PowerShell, Azure-native tooling).
- Stay current with Microsoft cloud technologies and recommended operational practices.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Fundamentals
- Working knowledge of Windows Server and Windows desktop environments
- Basic understanding of Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive)
- Foundational knowledge of Azure concepts (subscriptions, resource groups, virtual machines, storage, networking)
- Familiarity with core infrastructure services such as Active Directory / Entra ID, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy
- Networking concepts (IP addressing, routing, firewalls)
Operational & Professional Skills
- Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline
- Methodical troubleshooting and problem-solving approach
- Ability to follow established procedures and escalate appropriately
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Strong desire to learn and grow technical skills
Nice-to-Have / Growth-Oriented Skills
- Bilingual (French and English)
- Exposure to monitoring and alerting tools (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, third-party platforms)
- Introductory PowerShell scripting or automation experience
- Familiarity with ITSM tools (ticketing, change management, asset tracking)
- Awareness of security frameworks or regulated environments (e.g., healthcare - privacy regulations)
- Microsoft certifications (or working toward)
