Position Summary
The BHS Dispatcher supports the real-time monitoring, coordination, and control of the airport’s Baggage Handling System (BHS). This role assists in ensuring that baggage flows efficiently from check-in through screening and sortation to aircraft loading areawhile maintaining system reliability and operational continuity. Working as part of the Maintenance team, the BHS Dispatcher monitors system performance, responds to alarms and disruptions, and coordinates with maintenance, ramp, and airline personnel. The role reports to the BHS Duty Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
System Monitoring and Control:
• Monitor the Baggage Handling System (BHS) through control room interfaces (SCADA/HMI systems).
• Track conveyor status, alarms, jams, and system faults in real time.
• Start, stop, or reset conveyor lines and sortation systems as required.
• Assist in managing baggage flow to ensure proper routing to outbound flights and reclaim areas.
• Escalate system abnormalities or failures to maintenance teams promptly.
Operational Coordination:
• Coordinate with ramp agents, airline staff, and operations teams regarding baggage flow and flight priorities.
• Support baggage routing adjustments during peak operations, delays, or system disruptions.
• Assist in implementing contingency plans during system failures or irregular operations.
• Communicate effectively with maintenance teams to resolve system issues quickly.
Incident Response and Troubleshooting Support:
• Identify and respond to alarms, blockages, or system inefficiencies.
• Assist in isolating affected areas of the system during faults or breakdowns.
• Provide real-time updates to supervisors and stakeholders during operational incidents.
• Support recovery efforts to restore normal baggage flow after disruptions.
Documentation and Reporting:
• Log system events, alarms, and operational incidents in control systems or reporting tools.
• Maintain accurate records of disruptions, delays, and corrective actions taken.
• Follow operational procedures, checklists, and standard operating practices.
Safety and Compliance:
• Follow all airport safety policies and operational procedures.
• Ensure safe system operation by adhering to Lockout Tagout (LOTO) coordination when required.
• Report unsafe conditions or operational risks immediately.
• Maintain situational awareness in a safety-critical environment.
Teamwork and Continuous Learning:
• Work collaboratively with maintenance technicians, operations staff, and external stakeholders.
• Participate in training on BHS systems, control software, and operational procedures.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system efficiency and reliability.
• Perform additional duties assigned by the Operations Supervisor or Manager.
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Technical diploma (DEP) or technical certification in Electromechanics, Electrotechnology, Industrial Electronics, Electrical or Mechanical Technology, or a related field is preferred.
• 1–3 years of experience in airport operations, dispatching, control room operations, or a similar environment.
• Bilingual (French and English) is required.
Basic Knowledge In
• Baggage Handling Systems (BHS), conveyor systems, or automated material handling systems (training provided).
• Control room operations, monitoring systems (SCADA/HMI), or similar platforms.
• Airport operations, ramp activities, and flight schedules (asset).
• Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems is an asset.
Skills
• Strong situational awareness and ability to monitor multiple systems simultaneously.
• Problem-solving and quick decision-making in time-sensitive situations.
• Effective communication and coordination skills.
• Ability to follow procedures and respond to operational incidents calmly.
• Familiarity with computer systems and operational software.
• Hands-on mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on Baggage Handling Systems (BHS).
• Ability to diagnose and respond to mechanical and operational issues within conveyor and automated systems.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment including evening and alternating weekend shifts.
Working Conditions
The BHS Dispatcher works primarily in a control room environment within the airport facility, while also supporting hands-on preventive maintenance activities as part of a small maintenance team.
The role supports 24/7 airport operations and may involve:
• Continuous monitoring of multiple screens and systems.
• Fast-paced, high-pressure operational environment.
• Shift work including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Coordinating with field teams and occasionally working in operational areas.
• Performing hands-on preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting on baggage handling and related systems.
• Working in both indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
• Standing, climbing, crawling, and lifting equipment or parts as required.
• Working at heights (roof access, scissor lifts) when necessary.
• Responding to operational and maintenance-related emergencies such as system failures, baggage jams, or power outages..
This is a full-time onsite position. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the employee is expected to support both system operations and maintenance activities to ensure continuity and efficiency of airport operations.
